Henna's Heart -- Tuesday August 30th, 2011
When Henna had her spay surgery, the vet noticed she had a heart murmur. We were fortunate to get an MRI donated to us, and it turns out the murmur is due to Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), which can be corrected by surgery.
This heart surgery costs at least $3,000.We hope to find a vet to perform the surgery at a discount, but we need to raise as much as we can. The surgery has a greater than 92% success rate, so we will be able to find a forever home for Henna and she can live a normal life.
Without the surgery, there is a 60% chance that she will die of heart failure before she’s a year old.

Recess -- Tuesday November 30th, 2010
11/16/2010:
Our latest poster child: This is Recess. Recess is a temporary name for this dog, who was named REEFER, for goodness sake! We are calling her Recess for now, because she is taking a break, and recovering from being dragged behind a truck for an unknown distance. Her recovery will be lengthy and expensive. Her toes are torn away to the nub, her pads are hamburger. She has road rash on her boobs, thighs, and vaginal area. She is on pain killers and antibiotics, and she needs her bandages changed and her feet cleaned every day. Just now, while the wounds are still fresh, she requires sedation to change her bandages which is 90.00 each day. It take a full roll of vet wrap per day, plus the gauze, ointments and cotton wrap. We thank Middletown Vet in Middletown, CA for taking in this injured dog and caring for her at their expense until I got there. If you can help us take care of her now, please use the Paypal link to the left, or our mailing address. The photo above is a typical morning at our house, at least one dog on the counter, and all the feeding paraphernalia neccessary to feed the orphans.
11/19/2010: What a good girl Recess is. We tried the daily bandage change sans sedation and she did great! And, she will not need dinner tonight after consuming a full jars of treats while we worked on her. It's taking 2 rolls of wrap outside, and 1 roll for inside, and she is leaving her feet alone once wrapped. She finally pooped too. O yay, a good day.
11/20/2010: Recess took a few steps today. She also went with us to the adoption event, sat in a chair and received treats and pets all day from adoring fans. One of her fans bought her boots for the wet weather, and a days worth of vet wrap! Thank you.
11/21/2010: I put her boots on and carried her out for a potty this moring. No go. Then, Recess got up by herself, tottered onto an ottoman, and pooped. On the ottoman. I was right there in the kitchen doing dishes and didn't see it happen. Odd. An hour or so later, she tottered quietly outside and peed like a big girl. That was all a big deal. I had to change her bandages again extra because they got all wet. Now she is resting. So is she housetrained or no? We shall see.
11/22/2010: Touristing with the folks today and Recess came along. She sat in the car, happy as a clam. She loved meeting the folks when they first arrived and rolled over on her back for my dad. She is lying still for bandage changes but she is also starting to tear at them. She is taking herself oitside for potty but she is exhausted when she comes back in. She spends most of her time lying in a dog bed, or on the couch. So, she really enjoyed her outing, even if all she did was sit in the car. She was a good girl all day. Her feet are healing, still some spots that are deep enough to bleed, but the flesh is growing back, and is pink and beautiful. We found antibiotic ointment at the Dollar Store, and our vet is selling the rest of the supplies to us at cost. So, we are all doing very well, and Recess is looking forward to a nice Thanksgiving Dinner.
11/25/2010: What to say? It was a good couple of days and I think that we have reached a status quo. It takes about 30 minutes to change all the bandages and it must be done again if she chews them. She is a secret pottier, she will not go when I carry her out. Instead, she waits, and goes when we are not watching. Mostly outside. She is walking further now, but stills tires quickly. She is in a bit of painand really does not want to walk much. We carried her out with us to take pictures and she was so happy she almost frolicked! She loved the pond. Loved it. I am worried about what she will do when I have to work all day. She is totally a mamma's girl, and when we go to bed she snuggles up so tight to me that she pushes me off the bed around 3 am. Consistantly. So now, I think we are in a holding pattern, waiting for flesh to grow back, and pain to disappear. Tomorrow we pick up a pup who lost his leg.

Ending July With a Bang! -- Wednesday July 21st, 2010
2 new litters, lots of new small dogs, AND both Shelby and Baker are in their new forever homes. Of course, others have been adopted as well this month, but Shelby and Baker were our "broken" dogs early on. We did get some donations to help with their bills, and most happily, they are now in loving homes with one on one attention. Thanks to all of you that sent in money to help with Shelby and Baker.
Check out the animal list to see all the new guys. The labby litter is beautiful, and each dog is identical to it's siblings. Therefore, they are all spectacular.
Broken Dogs -- Saturday June 26th, 2010
THIS MONTHS BROKEN DOGS,
We are currently fostering 2 dogs who came to us with painful, debilitating problems that their owners were either unable or unwilling to have treated.
1st:
Shelby, an 8 year old Sheltie, was found wandering the streets with a painful limp. After no one claimed her from the shelter, she came to us. We had her spayed, gave her a general health check with negative blood work. That left her with one painful and expensive problem, a torn Cruciate Ligament. We have had her knee repaired and she is now recovering slowly. As you can imagine, her medical bills continue to mount beyond our current means.
2nd:
Baker, a 10 year old Labrador Retriever, who, after achieving "Senior Citizen" status, was surrendered by his owners. He came to us, limping with painful, open, draining cysts that impeded his every movement. The "lumps" that are scattered over much of his body, have been biopsied, and fortunately found to be benign. He is taking medications for the pain. His xrays show no other disease, he's just old like us. Despite the care and love he was denied throughout his life, Baker is a very happy and loving dog. He has also has accumulated medical bills that stress our abilities as a nonprofit rescue organization.
Please consider supporting these "Broken Dogs" with a monetary donation toward their ongoing, loving care...we will tell them you care.
Watch for updates on Shelby and Baker!
