Rocky is a 6 month old purebred Boxer. Very loving and outgoing. He is recovering from intestinal ailment and is not yet available for adoption but in need of Sponsers to help with his $500+ medical expenses.
Rocky was surrendered to us by his
owner who could not afford Rocky's medical costs. To date, the owner
has spent 500.00 at the vet, not including food, treats, flea meds
etc. Rocky's previous owner changed Rocky's diet numerous times and
also tried feeding a raw diet. Rocky was experiencing bouts of drooling and
vomiting. The surrendering owner stated that the dog was vociferously
eating dirt and grass. At the first episode xrays were taken and
nothing was seen. Blood work was completed and it was normal.
Worming was done. Fecals were normal. That cost was under 500.00.
When the second bout of vomiting occurred, the vet recommended
surgery to explore the digestive system and see if there was a
blockage. According to the surrendering owner this cost was estimated
at 7,000.00. The owner called us during this second bout of vomiting and we took the dog in. We also did
xrays, $250.00. Nothing. Dog seemed fine, some drooling. Had one vomit
that showed dirt and foliage. Took Rocky home, he ate a meal of
sensitive stomach canned food. Small amount of vomit. Rocky drank
copious amounts of water all night. Rocky went back to vet the next
day for a barium series. All normal, ($250.00). No mega-esophagus, no
blockage. Small amount of vomit that night too.
Rocky has now been with us 5 days and
he is eating a good quality kibble with no fillers, no corn. He eats well, has a
normal activity level. Farts like a fiend. Happy, enthusiastic. Gets
along great with all dogs, loves people, very social. Housetrained.
To date, he is eating normally, and not
vomiting. Farting has decreased. We have wormed him again.
My best guess is that the previous changes of food
and a raw diet for a too young dog may have been the culprit. It shard to know if the changes in food came becaue of a bout of vomiting or visa versa, but there does seem to be a circular patern of vomit, change food, vomit. We have
ruled out the most common serious digestive issues. Our vet has no thoughts on possible not so serious issues. Rocky has not vomited for
days and does not graze on dirt, grass or foliage.
Stayed tuned and we'll see how Rocky
does.
The following text has been copied onto almost every boxer website I read:
* Finally, on the rather delicate subject of flatulence - the Boxers
digestion is sometimes less than perfect. Even when fed a high quality food, SOME
may have rather frequent and, well, noxious episodes of
passing gas. This, of course, varies with the individual and may not occur at all.
