All LCAS dogs are fostered in private homes. We do not have a facilty and all volunteers work full time. Most dogs are transported to our scheduled adoption events which are listed on the events page. Please do call first to make sure a particular dog is coming to an event. Sometimes the van is overfull and dogs get the day off. Other arrangements can be made for meeting a dog if you are out of the area, or work weekends. If you are viewing this dog through petfinder.org, PLEASE CLICK THROUGH to the Lake County Animal Services webpage to get more detailed information about this dog.

Friendly but shy

March 14th,

Well the time has come and to be honest I had no trust at first this time would arrive.  Daphne is doing so well.  She still shys away when I am walking around and bend over to pet her.  I think that will fade in time if you, her new person, offer her treats as you walk around.  Outside and off leash, when I whistle she comes and I give her a treat, I just have thought to do it in the house.

If I am in bed reading, or sitting on the couch, she is next to me or in my lap.  If I did not already have my legal limit of dogs, I would just keep her.  I have had over 300 foster dogs over the last 10 years and there were only a few I really wanted to keep.  She plays well with my Doxie boys and with Joplin, a 50lb Rottweiler X.  She leaves the cats alone and is not focused on the birds.  She is a terrier though and I am sure she will chase something.

Her ideal home would have another dog to show her the routine, a person or persons willing to take her the next step, let her be inside when they are and have enough time to take her on walks.  She will walk on a leash.  She is still getting a little car sick, I am hoping she will outgrow that.

She is crate trained at home and in the car.  She does not eat much and is a healthy girl who should be someone's beloved companion for a long time.

If you want to know more, give me a call, leave a message (you will hear a dog poem) and I will return your call.  I (and so she will be down in Santa Rosa much of this Friday & Saturday, 19th & 20th)  Home phone 707 275-9171 or over the weekend, cell phone 707 360-7589

Daphne is making great leaps.  Here she is with MacLeod (my Doxie) telling me to get up NOW??

February 17th,

Daphne is coming closer.  She occasionally will sleep near me and I can put out my hands and pick her up and pet her all over.  She still only comes to me when I have a biscuit in hand.  She is playing with Merlin & MacLeod.

January 26th
Another big jump.  Daphne let me bath her and not one threatening look.  Then this morning as I was getting up and the dogs were waking up too, she put her paws on the edge of the bed (She sleeps under the bed) and then later actually let me pick her up (she did not see me coming or she would have gotten out of the way) and put her in my lap and just pet her for 20 minutes.  Small joys

Daphne is slowly coming out of her shell.  She does what the other dogs do and last night initiated play and jumped on the couch.  She still does not come to me unless I am holding a small dog biscuit, which she takes gently from my hand.  Whenever I think this training (though I am not sure who is training whom) is going nowhere, she makes another small step.

And what a cutie she is.

Daphne most likely came from some hoarder.  She has never been handled by a person.
She spent the first 3 days under my sideboard, only coming out to eat and to follow my dogs outside.  It took her 5 minutes to come back in and only when she could not see me.
Then she hid out in her crate.  I feed all the dogs in crates and she quickly learned to go into hers.

It is still difficult to catch her and I can only do so when she is in her crate.  I keep a leash on her when she is in the house.  I try to make time that she is next to me, even though she still would rather not be.  I walk her on a leash with my Dachshund, MacLeod, who pulls her this way and that.  She takes it better from him.

Thank You Cesar Millan for talking about the power of the back.  My pack, Joplin, Merlin & MacLeod give Daphne direction even though she is not really relating with them at the moment.  She follows them around the house now and so is learning to follow me.

DAPHNE! I am petting you!
